D.C. police said Sunday that a body discovered in a waterway near the southern tip of Reagan National Airport on Saturday is that of a woman.

Officer Hugh Carew, a D.C. police spokesman, said the body was discovered in a waterway near the 3800 block of Thomas Avenue sometime before noon.

On land, that would be in Virginia, but D.C. police are responsible for cases in the water there, Carew said. It is near where the Four Mile Run stream meets the Potomac River.

Carew said he did not know how the body was discovered or how it came to be in the water.

A police spokesman said Sunday that the body was that of an unidentified woman and authorities have classified the case as an undetermined death investigation.
